Psychology students from the Faculty of Organisational Studies “Eduka” in Belgrade, accompanied by faculty professors and associates, visited the District Prison in Novi Sad on 16 October 2026. During the visit, they had the opportunity to gain first-hand insight into the functioning of the prison system, the work of various departments and, in particular, the role of psychologists in the treatment of convicted individuals.

The students were welcomed by Milorad Stoleski, Head of the Security Department, who introduced them to the institution’s history, the classification of inmates and the security aspects of prison operations. Katarina Ostojić-Ilić, Head of the General Affairs Department, explained the legal framework governing the institution’s work and the structure of the inmate population. Meanwhile, Aleksandar Ajdarić, Head of the Training and Employment Department, spoke about the importance of work engagement for inmates, the development of work habits and skills, and the organisation of work both inside and outside the institution.

The students showed particular interest in the presentation delivered by psychologist Aleksandra Petković, Head of the Reception Unit within the Inmate Treatment Department. She introduced them to the day-to-day work of psychologists in the prison system, explaining how psychological assessments and inmate classifications are carried out, how individual treatment plans are developed, and how psychologists respond to crisis situations, including self-harm and suicide attempts.

During their tour of the prison complex, the students visited the cardboard packaging and concrete production facilities, the farm and other parts of the institution. The prison chapel attracted particular attention as the first chapel built within a prison complex in Serbia, with its walls painted by the inmates themselves.

The visit was also a valuable experience for the members of the “Eduka” team who accompanied the students: Jana Mitrović, Veljko Samardžić and Nemanja Popović.

The encounter held special personal significance for Assistant Professor Dragana Mitrić-Aćimović, PhD, who led the study visit and had previously worked as a psychologist at the District Prison in Novi Sad. During the visit, she was also presented with one of the diplomas she had earned through professional development at the Training Centre of the Administration for the Enforcement of Criminal Sanctions.

This study visit represents another step towards strengthening the connection between academic education and professional practice. The District Prison in Novi Sad is one of the institutions where “Eduka” psychology students will have the opportunity to complete their professional placements, gaining first-hand experience and developing competencies essential for their future careers.

The Faculty of Organisational Studies “Eduka” extends its gratitude to the Administration for the Enforcement of Criminal Sanctions, as well as to the management and staff of the District Prison in Novi Sad, for their excellent cooperation, warm hospitality and willingness to actively contribute to the education and professional development of our students — future psychologists.
